Education specialist advises on school placements
As the majority of children settle into their new school term, there has been an increase of children still trying to get a school place in Southampton, with numbers doubling since last year advises Moore Blatch Resolve.
Local councils have confirmed that they are already adding new places at schools around the city to cater for current demand.
Moore Blatch Resolve education specialist Leena Hurloll says that by not providing adequate school places, the Local Authority has failed to comply with its duty to ensure that these children are in full time education.
“Finding out that your child has not obtained a school place can be incredibly stressful, but it’s important to realise that there are a number of solutions that the Local Authority can offer even in the absence of a school place,” said Leena.
So exactly what should parents be aware of? Leena details below some useful information to bear in mind:
- Children of a statutory school age must be educated either at school or at home by their parents.
- Parents of children without a school place are able to challenge the Local Authority’s failure to provide their child with a school place.
- The Local Authority has a number of solutions it can offer parents including;
- A school placement at another suitable school in the area
- A school placement at a school out of the area (with transport considered)
- Home tuition
- Tuition at a library or other suitable location.
“The first step for parents would be to appeal to the Local Authority. If this isn’t successful then they could make an application to the High Court for assistance to secure a suitable school place for their child.”
“With the correct level of support, parents can ensure that they get the right provision in place and make sure their child is properly educated. It is not in anyone’s interest for a child to be out of education,” concludes Leena.
