Botulism is caused by toxins produced by clostridium botulinum bacteria, it is rare but can be extremely dangerous.

The toxins attack the nerves, brain and spinal cord and causes paralysis. If this goes untreated the paralysis will spread to the lungs, causing failure to breathe followed by death.

Symptoms of food-born botulism usually begin with:

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhoea

If you think that you are suffering from food poisoning it is important that you visit your GP to obtain a firm diagnosis with samples being sent for testing to confirm the bacteria which has caused the problem.
