Cryptosporidium

Cryptosporidium is a singled celled parasite which can cause illness if ingested.

This illness can come from various sources including:

  • People

  • Animals and their faeces

  • Untreated drinking water (contaminated by either agricultural or human sewage source)

  • Swimming in contaminated water.

Infection is frequently associated with foreign travel.

While any one can be infected by the parasite, it tends to occur in children between the age of 1 to 5 years. Most individuals will make a full recovery from food poisoning caused by cryptosporidiosis; those that are vulnerable, such as people with low immune systems can suffer more.

Symptoms can include:

  • Abdominal pain

  • Diarrhoea

  • Vomiting

  • Fever

If you think that you are suffering from food poisoning, it is important that you visit your GP to obtain a firm diagnosis with samples being sent for testing to confirm the bacteria which has caused the problem.
